Xi'an Jiaotong University, founded in 1896 in Shanghai as Nanyang College , is located in Xi'an, the world-famous ancient capital. It was moved from Shanghai in 1956. Through its persistent efforts made during the past century, it has become a university featured "super start, solid base, strict requirements, stressing practice". Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the leading comprehensive and research universities in China, covering nine studies, such as science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, and liberal arts, the first two of which are especially outstanding. Presently, its teaching staff totals more than 3,000 and its student population amounts to 31,975, among them one-forth is graduates. Xi'an Jiaotong University keeps a wide range of international exchange, and now it has established cooperation and exchange relations with more than 100 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Great Britain, Japan, Germany, France, etc. Today, the Chinese government has acknowledged Xi'an Jiaotong University as one of the nine universities in China, as well as the only one in northwest China, aiming at world-famous level.

Xi'an, historically called Chang'an ("eternal peace"), is the biggest city in northwest China. Since BC1134, thirteen dynasties found their capitals here, including the West Zhou, Qin, West Han, Tang, etc. The famous "Silk Road" starts here. And there are many historic interests, e.g., the world-famous Terra Cotta Warriors, the 1,000-year-old pagoda-Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the biggest, the best-protected ancient city wall and other rare historic relics.
