Xi’an Jiaotong University is a 231 hectare campus located in the ancient city of Xi’an ,Shaanxi province, and is now a state key university under the direction of the Chinese Ministry of Education. Originally fiybded ub 1896 as Nanyang College in Shanghai, it was officially renamed as Jiaotong University in 1921,and was one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China. In 1956, at the decision of the State Council to meet the strategy needs of national economy reconstruction, the main body of Jiaotong University was moved to xi’an and was renamed Xi’an Jiantong University in 1959. It was one of the universities included in priority construction project of education during the 7th Five-year Plan(1986-1990), and the 8th Five-year Plan(1991-1995), and became one of the initial colleges of the state Project 211. In 1999, it became one of the nine universities aimed at high academic level and international reputation by the Chinese Government. In April 2000, Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics, Xi’an Medical University and Xi’an Jiaotong University were merged as the present Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Xi’an Jiaotong University is a comprehensive university of natural science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, liberal arts and law, with engineering science as its main focus. At present, the university has a staff of 15,253 members, among which there is a teaching staff of 3,160 members. The faculty consists of 606 professors, and 1004 associate professors. There are five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and six academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Among the 31,975 full-time students in this university, there are nearly 8,847 postgraduate students in pursuit of doctorship and mastership. We have more than 420 foreign students coming from 23 countries such as the USA, Japan and Pakistan. Sixty-seven undergraduate specialties, 157 academic subjects authorized to confer master degrees, 102 academic subjects authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees, and eight engineering categories authorized to confer professional degrees are included in Xi’an Jiaotong University. Also there are 20 state key academic subjects, 15 post-doctoral research stations. Additionally, we have five state key laboratories, five state specialty laboratories, three first-class hospitals including the first clinical, second clinical and stomatology hospital, and a library named after the Chinese famous scientist-Qian Xuesen. The Network Center in Northwest China is located here.

Xi’an Jiaotong University has extensive international academic exchanges. Currently, the university has signed numerous agreements on academic cooperation and exchanges with more than 100 universities and enterprises from over 20 countries and districts, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany. Student joint-training projects and other cooperative projects exist between Xi’an Jiaotong University and some well-known universities, such as Stanford University, Tokyo institute of Technology and Osaka University.

In according with the implementation of the “21st Century Education Revival Project”, Xi’an Jiaotong University is geared towards superior academic level and international reputation at present, and expects to become a world-class university by the middle of the 21st century.
